Hội Làng/ My village celebration

My village celebration this year happened exactly in a rainy week, plus we had much homeworks to do so we didn't have any time to take care this blog. For that reason, I have to use my photos from this celebration 2 years ago. Hope it's ok.

Anyway, Hanoi doesn't have much village left. Infact, Villages now become streets. This is where I live but 20 years ago I have no idea about "village". I'm just a part of it.

A week before the big day, they hang the colorful flags everywhere to notice people around, even banner. I and the kids were so exicted for the "Lion Dance". Because the team usually worked hard for it.

Old people are the main and busiest characters (my grandpa is one of the organizers). But I feel happy when there are lot of young people participate this celebration (the lion dance team, for example). Old people used to act Fairies. They were glad and having fun. They seemed like 20.

After the exciting lion dance, they celebrate a small serious tradition. And when taking picture in a side yard, I met some people who did not live here anymore but this day, every year they came back to visit their relation and of course, the village.

What I love the most in the village celebration? Eating. Eating in public is different when you eat at home, especially the event like this. Even I don't want to eat my mom always said "eat a little, the village saint will bless you." So, I always eat. I believe the saint and my great ancestor always follow me and wish me the best.

Hanoi Bus Stories

I have taken bus to school for 4 years. It's a 10km and 30 mins long. For my route, it has about 14-15 stops which I'm even sleeping or closing eyes still knowing where is where.
I only take one Bus 21 always. But I'm pretty sure who wants to get a bus. Students mostly, old people, low income people and a little of thieves. Good news, we all have strong and fast bodies. In Hanoi bus world, this is no.1 standard. The drivers just give us 5-10 sec each stop, the doors opens then closes super fast. Not that they can't wait, they really can't wait! When dayly ticket costs 3000 VNdong (1/7 a US dollar) and monthly ticket cost 80000 VNdong (4 US dollar), they have to go back to the station to save their little precious time.
I remember my 1st year in college, one friend of mine lives near my house. He took the bus, then I.  So one morning, I met him on a bus with its another big rubber wheel on the floor. After catch me, it stopped no more. Lucky me. And my friend and I, got to school 10 mins earlier.
I remember Hanoi sky in the late afternoon. It got dark and I got Bus. Over those glass windows, the lights sparkled, red and yellow. I was safe in a giant box in 40kmph.
Today is no longer I feel safe. Sadly, I caught a man trying to steal my wallet. I am shock and upset. I feel I lost something deep inside which is a part of me for a long long time. Those people stand with me, now I see them in curious and defend eyes. I'm scared.
Anyway, I can't live with out bus now. It's cheap and the gas price keeps raising. There're still a lot of complex funny weird stories on Hanoi bus. Don't hesitate to get on one. And if you someday see a bag stucking on a back door of a bus in Hanoi street, don't be so surprise!

Cụ rùa Hồ Gươm/ The Only HoGuom Tortoise

We had thought that this note would be long with principal order. But this morning I decide to type out few things we have discussed in our recently talks.
Since the HoGuom Tortoise has been sicked, some people say that saving him (I suppose that the tortoise is male) is dispensable, that is obviously expensive work for a poor country. But it's a poverty of economics, what's about of culture? Everyone knows HoGuom and the tortoise have an important connection and have gone with the nation history for a very long time. (In the myth, Le Loi - one of the greatest Vietnamese Kings gave the Golden Tortoise - in fact a God back the powerful Sword) At the crossroad of time, the break out of exchange culture and new trend, I think there's nothing can stay firmly like this. How interesting for me to introduce to a foreign visitor we have an very old tortoise living under the lake and we-the people of the city care about him in every single moves.
If one day he's not here, Hanoi still moves on. We used to lost a lot of precious heritage but the spirit remains - that's what important. HoGuom-the Tortoise is an alive heritage, because of him so I can feel Hanoi soul. Then, if that day had come, at least you - a Hanoian, please be hurt!
Someone said he is an old animal, it's time for him to go. I know it's true. He's just another creature (even if he's really a God or not) of mother nature. But we have to see the whole picture. HoGuom is no more a perfect environment, we poison it everyday, the city is growing big, and we are pushing Hanoi's lung working too hard.

Updating 9 March 2011
These days are another busy days of Hanoi. We are saving him! We have discussed and thankfully made a few first steps. We made a mini hospital in the island of the lake. Sadly, the hospital has no patient. 2 days ago, they tried to catch him but totally failed. People say he's still enough strong to get away of the net. Anyway, I hope the Tortoise soon accept us to help him. And we promise to catch, to cure you, in direct way!

Hanoi Flower Festival

To begin a new colourful year I decide to visit Hanoi Flower Festival. The festival is held along Hoan Kiem lake as the first celebration toward Hanoi 1000 years old and the 2010 National Tourism Year in Hanoi. From 30 December 2009 to 3 January 2010, it is the great time for not only Hanoi people but also the tourists to know more about Hanoi culture and enjoy many artworks made of flowers. There are many people eager to come so I have to wake up early to get there.
The festival is an achievment of 1000 artisans and workers. Hundred of flower species were used to create a wonderful space which used to be a crowed street in normal days. It's so amazing with me to stand in the middle of the road seeing the street has become a wonderful garden! Though it's not the first time Hanoi holds this event but it still makes me surprise. So interesting when many trees of countryside can grow in the center of the city and right in front of Hanoi Post office. Besides, many symbols of Hanoi are reproduced in smaller size such as Khue Van Cac, One Pillar Pagoda, Long Bien bridge, Hanoi’s old tramcar, etc.

Well, I feel very very strange and peaceful...Everyone comes here… taking photographs, laughing, seeing beautiful things together under a small drizzling rain and bitter wind_ a typical weather of Hanoi’s winter.
The green, the red, the yellow, the blue... all the fresh colours are here, in the heart of Vietnamand Hoan Kiem lake has become a huge flower basket!
Love this festival and all people who have made it real.

The street of books

For my friend_ a Booklover ^^ And for my new friend in France :)
It’s Sunday and I decided to go to Dinh Le street to take some photos for my friend. She is a booklover and she used to buy books there when she was inHanoi.

Dinh Le is a famous street of books. There are various kinds of books but the main is literature. Most of booklovers in Ha Noi like those stores because the price is always cheaper and its atmosphere is very “books”!
One thing makes me love to go there is that the books are on old wooden shelves in narrow rooms, it is very different with some bookstores near there (bigger, more modern and also more expensive). Those small bookshops make me feel warm and friendly. Standing in the small space and surrounding with books, I almost forget noises from the outside, just me and books, I can feel the smell of fresh ink and paper and absolutely swim deeply in words. Moreover, you can ask the seller about every book. They can remember the name of all and some even can talk with you about their favorite books.

Luckily, I came here at early afternoon so the street was in quiet space. in weekends, the streets always become crowd and noisy by both customers (people who can't come here in weekdays) and sellers.
If this is your first time coming here, there is no doubt that you'll be shocked by the prices. every stores has a big banner that "sale 20-35%" or even "crazyyyy sale 20-50%". Well, but I don't think you can buy a book that sales by a half. What a great advertisement to attract customers, right! Anyway, I myself come in crazy-sale-store all the time. As you know, people like "CHEAP" and when you actually get in their doors, all around is so tight with people, books. According to me, you've got to get yourself a spot to put your feet on and well, pick up some favorite covers or authors. It's also noisy, too. People talking, asking, calling, maybe screaming? But it's really animated atmosphere!

Of course beside those who have stores, there are some don't so these sellers come here only in weekends. They put their shelves on the pavement, selling books until it gets dark and no more customers. In fact, these guys are my favorite and wise choice. You know why? They're selling the cheapest books in the whole world. Trust me, they don't have to pay the rental so the price is always amazing, even lower than others just a little little bit.

To end up this topic, well nothing to say but "welcome to the most wonderful book-street"!
